The Cookie Express Lands In Iraq

Y'all may remember reading one of my blog posts a few weeks ago about baking cookies for our soldiers in Iraq. I dropped off ten dozen chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies a couple of weeks ago at church, and I thought it would take weeks for the cookies to get to Iraq. Apparently, however, we've perfected express shipping to the Middle East, because the cookies already made it there!

I got a lovely email from Lt. Masood Manasia and the Soldiers of Alpha Battery of 3-320/3BDE/101st ABN DIV (AASLT) (I know nothing about the military and have no idea what any of that means - if someone can interpret, I'd love to know!). They thoroughly enjoyed the cookies and the support from the homefront, and they were so gracious to email their thanks for what seems to me to be the very least I could do to support them.

I emailed Lt. Manasia back and asked if we could continue sending cookies to his group. If he says we can, I'll schedule another cookie baking session soon - get your oven mitts ready!

And to Lt. Manasia and all the Soldiers of Alpha Battery - words cannot express how grateful I am to you for your service and your sacrifice to ensure that my family, my friends and my freedom is protected. I am humbled in the face of your unselfish sacrifice to our great country, and I pray to God every day that He will keep you safe, lead you in achieving your goals, and bring you home as soon as possible. Thank you, and God bless you all.

The Screaming Eagles?! Oh, that is just SO cool! I saw a documentary on the history of the Screaming Eagles last night on History International (yes, if you haven't already figured it out, I'm a massive nerd). Wow.

Anonymous, thanks for the info!

Last time I checked, being interested in history did not make one a massive nerd,in fact it makes for a much better educated and intresting person. If more people paid attention to history, we would have fewer problems today.

Too true! I think I was feeling more of a nerd because I was watching History International at midnight last night instead of sleeping, but I can't help it sometimes - I love that stuff. And this was an amazing documentary - all about the Screaming Eagles during WWII and their incredibly brave fighting during the Battle of the Bulge. I had no idea - it's the stuff you don't learn in school, and it's a shame we don't.

After the Germans had overrun American positions during the Battle of the Bulge, a German officer noticed that the Americans had cakes and cookies that had been delivered from home. He stated that at that point he realized the war was lost because the Americans had the resources supply their troops not only with fuel and ammunition, but also with things from home, whereas the Germans could barely get necessities to the front lines. Let's hope your cookies sent to Iraq are a sign of the same outcome.
